THE RUM DIARY DISCUSSION

Hunter Thompson, what more can we say. Fear and Loathing in the Caribbean.

thompson

I previously not read anything by Thompson, however with what I knew of him I was not dissappointed. As I expected HST shows the cynical side in what he writes. Yet I found it to be a fascinating read & very much enjoyed it!

The Rum Diary

One of Hunter's best books. I wonder if it really is a work of fiction...I miss Hunter. Great addition to anyone's collection.

nice quick read

A nice quick read for sitting by the pool or on the beach. Worth taking the time to read.

The Rum Diary

Took your suggestion and read it on my recent trip to Key West. It was a fun read sitting at the side of a pool in Truman Anex. Nice light read. Nothing to deep but gives you a light sense of life in PR in the 50's. Worth the read.

Rum Diary

As a novel, The Rum Diary is mediocre. As a semi-autobiographical account of Thompson's early journalistic career, it is mildly interesting, but only if you are a fan of his.

Long live HST

This is one of my all time fav. books its all there beach, booze, beauties and the doc holds nothing back. Did you know Jimmy Buffett was HST best man in his wedding craziness. READ this book you will not regret it.

tourist effect

What struck me about this book is the ever present "tourist effect" that changes - some would say ruins - a lovely spot in the world like Puerto Rico, Key West or .... hmm, what's next?

The Rum Diary

It will be interesting to see how the movie with Johnny Depp turns out. This book seems much better suited to translating to film, although there are parts that might seem a bit sketchy for folks these days, if I recall. ALmost guaranteed to be entertaining, and in a great locale!

the rum diary

You are probably right, although I believe Fear and Loathing was a great piece of writing. "The Great Shark Hunt" is a must read, agreed.

Rum Diary

This story is unbelievable. Paul Kemp's indulgence in rum and women, while writing for a failing newspaper, reveal a pre-Gonzo Hunter Thompson. He may have his flashes of instability but is so pleased and disgusted with his life that the imbalance creates movement in the novel. It's a great pick for any Thompson fan or Parrothead.

Fear & Loathing NOT!

Let's face it: Hunter gets a bad rap from all those folks who only know him from "Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas." That was a work which even Hunter admitted was a failed experiment in so-called "Gonzo journalism." This book was a novel written not at all in that mode, and a much better read would be his book on Hell's Angels or the anthology "The Great Shark Hunt." In the latter, you will discover the wide range of Hunter's talents as a perceptive writer. Shame on you for falling back on this catch-phrase to describe one of Hunter's weaker pieces.
